Before and After Conservation
Severe foxing can be caused by impurities in the paper, and through exposure to humidity. Yellow brown foxing spots can be cosmetically lightened with conservation washing.
Silk borders are made to protect the painting and to be handled. When the silk becomes the weak point over time, it is due to age, handling, or in this case water damage.
